Outdoor Shows I watched the Canary Wharf tower being built from my bedroom window in Limehouse and upon hearing it was to be topped off by a pyramid an idea developed - That would make an awesome light show. Then undaunted set about making it so, Designing visuals and video demonstrations we were rejected by Canary Wharf at first but we flew the tapes pictures and and a representative to New York to the owners and they loved the idea. But with two airports the Thames traffic and a million spectators a crew of thirty and 5 sub contractors “Light Year” was audacious and bold.

Canary Wharf project example The Police, The Civil Aviation Authority, Local Authority, Health & Safety Executive The Press &TV liaison, Site Management, Equipment get-ins and cabling over 30 floors, radio licences, fireworks, computer programming, staffing, sound to light via BBC radio 1 required managing. The 30 day show starting on New Years eve with a countdown to midnight went off without a hitch, with backups of backups and planning for every contingency and worldwide publicity “Light Year” is just one example of my creative & management skills.

Nightclubs LASERS are dangerous, A class 4 LASER (the highest rating) can blind at a distance in a blink of an eye, HEAVEN nightclub wanted to be the first in the UK. It took a filing cabinet full of paperwork countless meetings with experts, environmental health departments, but against all the odds we moved LASERs out of the research labs and onto the dance- floor. We created a whole new market and I was employed as a consultant on many other installations from that time on.

Health & Safety Environmental Health departments in London were notoriously difficult to please and required detailed drawings, measurements indicating maximum laser exposure, the sighting of every effect, target vertical and lateral clearances and finally expensive auto shut-off mechanisms. Outdoor shows were even more fraught with the Civil Aviation Authority for aircraft safety, the police for traffic safety its no small wonder other LASER companies steered clear of the capital city, or called me in. I blame a large part of “LASER fear down to the “No Mr Bond - I expect you to die!” scene in Goldfinger.
